Jackie Weger

A South Alabama native, Jackie Weger has been writing novels off and on for thirty years. She enjoys destination travel--going to new and strange places, meeting the natives, learning their customs, their foods, how they survive good  times and bad. She lived part of one winter with trappers in the Louisiana Swamps, volunteered at a sister of Mercy Mission in Colon, Panama--and had one of the most interesting conversations in her life with an old man and his dog as they sat on a bench waiting for a train in the Village of Versailles. Jackie loves books, coffee, tea, cats, gossip and all things Southern.

One of the things I love best about December is the fragrance of Christmas. Of course, you can buy all sorts of Christmas sprays, but I make my own in several ways.  Our Christmas dessert is fresh lemon icebox pie. All of the the lemon husks go into a big pot of simmering water on the back of my stove.

Add cinnamon, nutmeg, whole cloves, apple peelings and cores and orange slices and peels. If you happen to have on hand an essential oil of mint or lavender, toss in a few drops. Don’t turn on the stove’s vent fan, or you will send that lovely fragrance into your yard. Just keep adding water as the pot simmers down—you can use the mixture for the Twelve Days of Christmas.

If you are like me, you are gonna need that back burner for cooking Christmas dinner. The mixture can freshen your  disposal or go into a compost bin, or just sit in a jar under a counter or the kitchen sink. For instant Christmas Fragrance, I “perk” cinnamon, nutmeg and whole cloves in an old-fashioned percolator just before guests arrive.

Here is something I noticed over the years: When that lovely fragrance was permeating the house, my kids stopped bickering, my teenagers were more open and less sassy and the man in the house was less stressed and actually volunteered to help wash dishes. Cinnamon makes Christmas magic.

Need Help? Hire a Ghost. She Cooks.  Lottie Roberts has been sitting on her bones since the Civil War, waiting for her ticket to heaven until Justine Hale moves into Lottie’s two-hundred-year-old house with three generations of emotional baggage: Her mother, her ex mother-in-law and two pesky children. Lottie senses in Justine a kindred spirit, one filled with heartache and in reduced circumstances, which mirrors Lottie’s situation exactly. Justine needs help. Lottie is of a mind to provide it, but before she can say squat, Tucker Highsmith arrives. His dark eyes, lazy grin, and sexy Alabama drawl coupled with the dern braggart’s Mr. Fix-it talents just might be the answer to all of Justine’s problems--or,  maybe not… Because Lottie has her own agenda, one she has been waiting, hoping and praying for since she discovered her bones on a hidden staircase.

The Reluctant Hero
by Jackie Weger

Five Stars
“This was a clean, well written novel and caught me quite by surprise. I found the characters adorable, well developed and sometimes hysterical with their antics. I laughed out loud. It was really a great read. Excitement, survival, a horde of kids and fighting the elements equalled a very engaging, well written book and one I will totally cherish. Well worth the read.” ~ avp

“Beautifully written, I was up until 3:30 a.m.  finishing this story. The interview [with Capt Stillman] at the end was a perfect wrap-up.” ~ avp

Parnell Stillman is an ace pilot and man to the bone. The kind of man who keeps every motorized piece of equipment he owns in pristine condition--but his socks don't match. Flying is his high road until one sleet-filled morning--it isn’t. Mischance forces his plane down in a frozen wilderness. He can survive, but his live cargo is another matter--an annoying social worker and five orphans--the most irksome freight he has ever hauled in his career. Rebecca Hollis is determined to force the disagreeable, lackadaisical pilot to do whatever is necessary to insure the survival and rescue of the orphans… Even if it means making the noble gesture of keeping her mouth shut. But the pilot isn’t having it. Heroics is not his thing. No way. No how. No time. He’d rather dance with a grizzly or wrestle a puma than succumb to a wily do-gooder’s shenanigans. Rebecca Hollis has other ideas to ensure the rescue of the orphans—lots of them, all artful and disingenuous—one of which is bound to work… Or  maybe not.
